Alsager Town earn valuable point in midweek battle against Ashville

Alsager Town 1-1 Ashville

Alsager Town have extended their unbeaten run to four matches after a solid display against Ashville on Tuesday night.

First half

Ashville made the brighter start to the game on a night where the rain was pouring down heavily. However, Alsager had the first real chance of the game, with an effort which struck the side netting.

A few minutes later, Jordyn Fitton took on an ambitious strike from a long way outside the box and it only sailed over the bar by narrow margins.

The hosts continued to look dangerous and opened the scoring after 26 minutes when an Ashville defender headed the ball into his own net from a corner.

There were no clear-cut opportunities for either side during the rest of the first half, although Alsager did come close with a shot which hit the side netting again just before the break.

Second half

The Bullets had to work a lot harder at the back as the match went on and Ashville began the second half with a header which was lifted narrowly over the crossbar.

Despite this, Alsager did have a promising moment when two consecutive shots from inside the box were blocked by Ashville’s defenders.

The likelihood of another goal being scored continued to increase. An Alsager defender blocked a powerful free kick which was set to land on target, before the home team launched a counter attack of their own shortly after which forced George Huyton into a diving save.

While the Bullets did manage a few attacking breaks, it was the visitors who scored the next goal. Substitute Jonathon Cahill directed a looping header down the centre of the net and Dominic James froze on the spot as the ball crossed over the line after 86 minutes.

Alsager continued to defend deep throughout a lengthy period of stoppage time, but they did enough to seal a draw which seemed a fair result in the end.
