Alsager Town fall short against Cammell Laird as Wood Park struggles continue

Alsager Town 1-2 Cammell Laird

Alsager Town were without a victory at home since August, but looked to change this as Cammell Laird made the journey to Wood Park.

First half

Alsager had the first chance of the game and it was Luke Nicholls who almost found the net. He beat one defender out wide and then placed a light shot through another’s legs, but his effort drifted narrowly wide of the right post.

Cammell Laird had the next chance as George Burn was forced into a close range save. The goalkeeper was tested again soon after and then faced a long shot which struck the crossbar.

Nicholls caused the visitors another moment of worry as he took on a shot just outside the penalty box which landed just over the bar.

However, it was Cammell Laird who had the final opportunity of the half. Their forward beat two Alsager defenders on the right wing and got a shot on goal. The goalkeeper made the save, but was unable to clear the ball and another of the away teams’ players got a shot away, which failed to hit the target.

Second half

Alfie Carmichael had a chance to put the Bullets in front in the second half. Cammell Laird’s defenders wrongly claimed he was offside, but the striker continued to take the ball forwards. The goalkeeper was out of his net, but was able to save the disappointing effort.

Carmichael did get his goal not long after, with a composed finish after the ball was crossed in by Nicholls, who took the ball past the left-back and sent in a drilled cross.

Despite Alsager’s early dominance in the second half, Cammell Laird scored an eqauliser as the ball was headed in from a corner.

They continued to exert pressure on the Alsager defence and scored again with around 15 minutes left to play. The goalkeeper saved the initial shot, but the Merseyside outfit scored on the rebound to take the lead.

Ben Dobbie was not far away from finding an equaliser towards the end of the match with a shot was from distance, but it stroked the top of the crossbar and went out for a goal kick.

The Bullets had one final opportunity, a free kick at the end of stoppage time. The ball was met with a header, but it went straight at the opposition goalkeeper and the referee brought the match to its end.
