Alsager Town fall short against Stockport Georgians on miserable afternoon

Alsager Town 0-2 Stockport Georgians

Alsager Town hosted Stockport Georgians in a bid to win three matches in a row, but the visitors had other ideas.

It was a bleak afternoon at Wood Park, with most supporters finding shelter underneath the stands.

First half

The game was only minutes in when Alsager Town fell behind. Harry Lynn played the ball in from the left wing to Oli McFadyen and he scored from Stockport’s first attack.

Alsager had most of the possession for the next few minutes, but struggled to make anything happen.

The visitors crafted another opportunity after 20 minutes and made it 2-0. Goalkeeper Oliver Culkin, who was making his club debut, made a good initial save, but there were no defenders switched on to prevent Danny Kyobe from scoring on the rebound.

Not a lot happened for the next 15 minutes until Alsager had a half chance through Luke Nicholls. The winger delivered a promising cross, but it was dealt with by the defender.

Alsager Town’s chance creation was lacking in the first half

Stockport had the final chance of the half through McFadyen. He struck the ball against the ground and it bounced up and struck the crossbar.

Second half

The Bullets looked to get going in the second half and had an early free kick which was punched away by Morgan Piper. They would go on to have a number of set pieces, but the Alsager players in the box were usually second best in the air and did not win many headers.

As well as failing to make use of free kicks and corners, Alsager struggled to keep hold of the ball and often gave it away with misplaced passes.

However, it looked like the home team could finally find the back of the net around the 70 minute mark when a low cross was fired in off the right wing. Lewis Carr stretched out his leg in a bid to get the ball across the line, but he made contact with Piper. After a heated argument which involved a lot of pushing and shoving, Carr was shown a red card by the referee.

The decision was an extremely harsh one. Carr had a right to go for the ball and the opposition goalkeeper was fine after a couple of minutes anyway. It summed up a poor overall performance from the referee.

Alsager never really looked like scoring after that point as heavy rain continued to lash down. The match ended 2-0 and while Stockport only created a few chances during the match, the result was a fair reflection of the afternoon’s proceedings.
