Cheshire East Council has responded to a Town Council enquiry and explained why two roads bordering Alsager have been shut at the same time.
Radway Green Road and Alsager Road were both closed on June 23, with neither due to reopen until July 4. This has disrupted the journeys of Alsager residents, as both routes provide entry and exit points to the A500.
On top of this, Liverpool Road East in Kidsgrove closed for four days on June 23, while four way temporary traffic lights are causing large queues in Talke at the Linley/Newcastle Road junction.
A Cheshire East spokesperson said: “Radway Green Road is closed to allow Scottish Power to install high voltage cable. The road was closed on 23rd June and is due to reopen on 4th July. The works required a road closure due to the close proximity of the level crossing and other traffic management not being suitable or safe within the area due to the location of the working space and required equipment on site.
“On 23rd June Staffordshire Council had an immediate permit raised to allow there team to complete a drainage dig up due to a risk of the road collapsing on Alsager Road. Unfortunately, Cheshire East Highways were only made aware of the works after Scottish Power had commenced on site and the road was unsafe to reopen.
“Staffordshire Council have followed the correct legislation and requirements under the West and Shires Permit Scheme as an immediate permit does not have to be issued until 2 hours after works have commenced on site.
“This situation was out of our control, and we are making every effort to request Scottish Power to work longer hours and prioritise reopening the road and similarly for Staffordshire Council on Alsager Road.
“Both Radway Green Road and Alsager Road have signed diversion routes in place and there are no clashes with the diversionary routes that have been advised for drivers to take.
“In relation to Linley Road, as this is within Staffordshire Councils area I will escalate with them to request why this has been allowed with the other two closures taking place.
“I can only apologise for the inconvenience caused and we will make every effort to get the roads reopened as quickly as possible and assist with any congestion in the area.”
