Alsager Town Council yesterday elected a new mayor after the retirement of Jane Hearne.
Michael Unett, of the Labour Party, has been named as the person to fill the role. He first joined Alsager Town Council in 2019 and was the youngest ever person to be elected at the time.
Unett is only the second mayor in Alsager’s history. The role was previously known as the chairman, but this was changed two years ago.
An Alsager resident, Unett grew up between Alsager and Congleton and studied law at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Last night he announed his Alsager Foodbank and Cancer Research as his Mayoral charities for 2025-26.
He posted on Facebook: “Proud to have been elected last night as the Mayor of Alsager. I’m thankful to fellow councillors for placing their trust in me to be our second Mayor.
“I hope to serve this fantastic community to the very best of my ability and ensure Alsager Town Council continues to be a strong voice for residents and to provide good quality local services.
“Thank you to our retiring Mayor, Jane Hearne, for her amazing leadership and service. It’s been a privilege to serve with her during her term in office, and she has set the bar very high indeed.
“And congratulations to Cllr Pauline Hubbard on being elected as Deputy Mayor. I look forward to working with Cllr Hubbard over the next Civic Year.”
