Alsager councillor hints Cheshire East may be making a loss on parking charges

An Alsager Town councillor has revealed Cheshire East Council may be losing money on one Alsager car park.

Councillor Rod Fletcher contacted the council to ask how much income Well Lane car park had brought in during its first three months of charging.

The car park, along with Fairview and Station Road, used to be free to use, but Cheshire East introduced parking charges last December.

Cllr Fletcher received a response last week which revealed Well Lane car park generated £1,394.60 from December 2 last year to March 3.

Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Fletcher said: “I believe this works out at £104 a week and averages around £17 a day.

“It cost £8,821 to prepare the car park for charging. I have been advised that a warden has been visiting this car park on a regular basis. Will £17 a day cover the warden’s visit?”

Freedom of information request reveals hefty Cheshire East spending

A freedom of information request was recently sent to Cheshire East asking how much it cost in total to introduce parking charges across the borough.

Cheshire East responded: “The current figure is £444,846.19; however, this is subject to any further costs coming through for amendments, updates and snagging resolution.

“These costs in full will not be known until the end for the financial year.”
