Sue Helliwell to be ‘strong independent voice’ if elected to Alsager Town Council

Sue Helliwell, a town council candidate in Alsager’s east ward, has encouraged residents to give her their vote due to her ‘successful track record,’ ahead of tomorrow’s election.

Mrs Helliwell, who lives on Clowes Avenue, was a town councillor for Alsager’s central ward until she resigned in 2022 due to health issues, after she had a stroke during a council meeting.

She stands as an independent candidate, despite representing Labour and the Conservative Party in the past, during her seven years as a town councillor.

Writing to Alsager News, Mrs Helliwell highlighted her past achievements as a councillor, and stated her ambitions if she is elected.

She wrote: “I will be a strong independent voice for Alsager east ward residents. I want to make a real difference to support residents in our community, with energy and commitment.

“I have a proven successful track record, speaking up for residents at numerous meetings at Cheshire East and Alsager Town Council, both as a councillor and a resident.

Explaining her contributions on local issues, she wrote, “I recently spoke at the Highways meeting to support the return of the 317 Saturday service to Leighton Hospital and a Cheshire East planning meeting to object a development in the east ward. I have previously supported and worked on highway safety issues in Alsager.

She continued, “We must ensure that our parks and public open spaces are protected. In Alsager East Ward, public open spaces require a strong voice to protect them. If we lose them there will be nothing left in this ward to replace them.

“The east ward needs investment in infrastructure and a vote for me will allow me to strive to protect our public services, including our Library and Alsager HWRC.

“I am standing again, bringing years of experience to the role, and can hit the ground running. I enjoy helping residents achieve positive changes for our ward and am proud to call Alsager my home town. I will always strive to achieve the right outcome for east ward residents and not make promises I can’t keep.

“I urge residents to vote and let your voices be heard at the polling station on Thursday.”

Mrs Helliwell is standing against Labour candidate Gavin Soulsby. Information on his campaign can be found on the Action for Alsager Facebook page.

Parties including the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats did not put forward candidates, in the hope there would be no election, which comes at the cost of the taxpayer.
