A petition to stop the closure of the Alsager Household Waste Recycling Centre has been signed by more than 2000 people, as Cheshire East Council considers closing multiple sites and replacing them with a new tip in Congleton.
The petition, launched by local councillor Michael Unett, appeals for the centre in Alsager to remain open.
Mr Unett wrote: “Alsager has a well-established Household Waste Recycling Centre with usage figures and annual tonnage throughout that place it in the top four core sites in Cheshire East.”
“Alsager’s HWRC is vital for our community, providing an essential service that helps us manage our waste responsibly and sustainably.”
“Closing this facility in favour of a new one in Congleton would not only inconvenience residents but also create significant risks for Cheshire East Council in acquiring a new site, ensuring there was the right permissions to operate a new site and the affordability of a new site.”

An objection to the closure was previously expressed by Alsager Town Council, who said in May they were ‘extremely alarmed and disappointed’ that Alsager tip could permanently close.
Cheshire East Council launched a consultation in the summer to hear the views of residents, but Alsager locals were sceptical, after the results of a similar consultation on parking charges in the town were seemingly ignored.
The proposal to replace the Alsager site with the new Congleton centre will be considered at the Environment & Communities Committee Meeting of Cheshire East Council on September 26th.
The petition to keep the Alsager site open and to reject the new Congleton site can be viewed here.

why is the tip closing when it now has booking slots only for weekends as it’s so busy???
surely that is a contradiction
also as we are trying to do less mileage in our fuel cars why are you asking us to travel further to dispose of rubbish
