Alsager Town took on fifth place side, Cammell Laird, last night at Wood Park, as they eyed a return to winning ways, after Stockport Georgians handed them their first defeat of the season on Saturday.

The Bullets were much stronger than their opponents in the first half, opening the scoring when a pass back to goalkeeper, William Ebbrell, was intercepted. The move was completed with a calm finish which made it 1-0.

Alsager’s lead was soon doubled as striker, Alex Hughes, took the ball past Cammell Laird captain, Ryan Smith, on the edge of the penalty box and fired the ball past Ebbrell, who arguably should have done better.

Cammell Laird did have some half chances in the first half, but Bullets keeper Arran Lyons made the necessary saves to keep his side ahead, giving Alsager a deserved two-goal advantage at half time.

The second half saw Alsager more reliant on long balls from the back and yet it was the Bullets who continued to have the better chances.

Their high pressing football caused the Camels problems, as the Wirral side continued to pass the ball around the back and invite pressure from the opposition forwards.

The Bullets had a huge chance when Smith was dispossessed in his own box. The ball fell to Hughes, who had the time and space, but he got it all wrong as he looped the ball way over the bar.

Jeanny Leblanc-akpo also had a chance when he completed an impressive dribble down the left wing, but the defender did enough to put him off as he fired his shot over the bar.

But he did get his goal from close range after he received the ball from a well placed cross by debutant, Matthew Argent-Barnes, putting Alsager three ahead.

Cammell Laird looked like they would secure a consolation goal when Ashton Brogan was penalised for a handball inside the box, but the penalty was tamely hit to Lyon’s left and comfortably saved.
