Alsager Cricket Club broke the world record for the longest run-up to deliver the first ball in a cricket match, during a game to celebrate the club’s 150th anniversary on Friday.
Alsager players Sam Goodwin and Alex Perry ran 10.1km from Tunstall to Alsager to deliver the opening ball of the match, breaking the earlier record of 7.8km.

The match saw the chairman’s XI face the president’s XI in a celebratory game, featuring current and former players.
Ahead of the run-up, club chairman, Alan Stancliffe said: “This year is a very special one for our club so we thought we would mark it with a marquee match and a world record attempt. We hope to see lots of people at the club to cheer Sam on and see some of our former stars returning to play.”

“It’s quite some run up that the poor lad’s got to put himself through, but this is a truly special occasion – once in a lifetime sort of stuff! He’ll be fine. Just hope he doesn’t overstep.”
Alsager Cricket club are awaiting confirmation and recognition from the Guinness Book of Records.
