The Town Council said it was “extremely alarmed and disappointed” that Cheshire East was considering closing Alsager’s Household Waste Recycling Centre and replacing it with a new centre in Congleton.
Alsager tip was one of the top four waste centres in Cheshire East in 2022/23, used by 16 per cent of people across the borough.
The site was not only used by Alsager residents, but by those who lived in other towns and villages in Cheshire East.
The council said that along with the Crewe, Knutsford and Macclesfield sites, Alsager tip offered the largest range of recycling and disposal of different waste streams, making those sites the most adaptable for the long-term.
Those centres combined took around three quarters of the total waste deposited in Cheshire East.
While the Alsager site opened many years ago, the council said the proposed Congleton site would not be open in time for the start of a new contract.
And the new site would cost between 6-8 million pounds, causing large, long-term debts to pay off.
The council has asked residents to complete Cheshire East’s consultation, to raise their objections.
The consultation closes on June 16 and can be found here.
