The project to build a new supermarket in Alsager is back on. The Sainsbury’s store will include a 249-space car park, a petrol station and an Argos.
Sainsbury’s was originally given planning permission to build a store on the Twyford’s site on Lawton Road in 2015.
The grocery chain said supermarket shopping habits and the food retail market “changed significantly,” causing plans to be revised.
The new store will boast a floorspace of 25,000 square feet and one hundred new jobs will be created.
The 249-space car park will be accompanied by a three pump petrol station. Lawton Services is the only other petrol station in the immediate vicinity.
Changes have been made with the environment in mind. The store’s roof will have solar panels as Sainsbury’s aims to be net zero by 2035.
There will be 4 EV charging spaces for electric vehicles.
The in-store cafe has been removed from plans to align with Sainsbury’s food led approach to its new stores.
The store will be more than a place to buy food. Sainsbury’s Tu Clothing range will be sold, while an Argos store will provide a technology, home and toy products offering.
Sainsbury’s Director, Patrick Dunne, said: “All of us at Sainsbury’s are passionate about our tasty, well-sourced food and we want to bring more of it within easy reach of our customers wherever we can, so we’re delighted to be able to confirm our plans for a new supermarket in Alsager.”
He said they are looking forward to working with Cheshire East Council to deliver the “long-awaited store” for the local community.
Sainsbury’s will write to key stakeholders in the town and 180 nearby households. The application will then be submitted to Cheshire East Council.
The original plan for a new Sainsbury’s store faced some opposition, but was not enough to block the application.
The current Sainsbury’s Local unit on Crewe Road will continue to trade once the new store is open.
